Here is a quote from Bob about Bush:
(GELDOF: Bush ‘has actually done more than any American President for Africa’)
Another person I heard say that this fact could outweigh the tragedy created by “his” war in Iraq. That makes me uncomfortable. Can they really be compared? Can one really cancel out the other? What do you guys think?

I think his good deeds in Iraq will far outweigh those done in Africa. Time will tell.

Nate is obviously joking, since even the best case scenario in Iraq wouldn’t come close to the progress being made in Africa, where people are *actually* being “liberated”.
I certainly applaud the decisions made by the G8 leaders so far, and earnestly hope that they continue in this vein.
I don’t think it’s necessarily a direct comparison with Iraq, however, since the Bush administration did not offer this on their own, but rather in response to overwhelming international and domestic public opinion, whereas in Iraq they did take the initiative, in spite of overwhelming opposition.

Actually, I wasn’t joking. In twenty years if Iraq is an open, free society with an economy able to provide for it’s citizens and Africa is again a continent mired in debt and still held hostage by dictators it will be obvious that more good was done for Iraq. I’m not poo-pooing debt relief when it demands democratic reforms and I’m not an expert on the subject. I’m just saying, time will tell.

I think I was present for said remark, Martha and I was non-plussed by it. I agree with Nate’s comment but not the way he means it. In actuality, it seems like apples and oranges, Iraq & Africa.
