Emma wanted blonde streaks in her hair. Is she too young?

i’ve heard something about “baby hair”. you know how soft and fine kid’s hair is? would it damage her hair more than it does adult hair? you should ask alex.

Ok, I will. But…I already did it. Uh oh, I’m in trouble now.

Her hair will be ok. When I was close to her age, I was getting my first perm. My hair wasn’t ruined even with those harsh chemicals. Ok, so maybe it didn’t necessarily look the best, but it didn’t ruin it. I still have hair today.

so, how do the streaks look?

they look cute…i think. it isn’t much really. i actually was thinking more from a moral standpoint. you know, making our kids grow up too fast and such. but i think there are more important things to focus on.

yeah, blonde streaks can look natural. I’d definitely draw the line at lipstick and terry pants that say “juicy” across the butt. Sheesh, what is this world coming to?

its juicy cotoure. its an expensive high-end clothing line.

ya, all of their clothes say juicy on them. across the butt it looks like they’re saying their butt is juicy, lol

actually, i figured that’s what you meant. i was dodging the question because i don’t think it’s a big deal whether or not she has her hair colored, but more how she interprets the importance of her or other’s appearance. i guess it’s up to you to reinforce the right values while down playing the “need” to have your hair or clothes this way or that. after that, hey, color your hair just for fun. if you see her getting obsessive over it, then it’s time to put the brakes on. don’t you agree? doesn’t everyone agree with me? of course you do!

our rule of thumb with fashion is that they can do it when they’re old enough to ask for it. with obvious exceptions (joey’s asked for a tattoo any number of times…). we established this when i started noticing all the baby girls with pierced ears.

Just have fun with it. It’s not immoral by anyone whose opinion you’d actually care about or by those who are a part of your life. I’m with Jac though- definitely nix the whole idea if she becomes obsessed.
Question for you though: why worry about coloring her hair when you didn’t worry when she got her ears pierced? They are along the same lines.

I guess cuz babies get their ears pieced so it doesn’t seem taboo to do it young. But you don’t see too many babies with weaves.

Babies used to not get their ears pierced that young. It just became more of a fashion, or more accepted by society to pierce kids ears. Hair is the same thing- it’s just a fashion thing. More and more kids are doing that now. Doesn’t mean that Emma is being rushed to grow up. It just means that she’s learning to accessorize (something we all know she’s good at anyway) with her hair.

Emma knows what she wants. As long as she doesn’t want purple hair- not sure what her school would say about that! I’m glad you waited till Emma was old enough to “choose” to get ears pierced.
