He can’t be serious?

Delay

Positively speaking

I decided I needed to post something on the good side of school since it was starting to sound like I don’t have anything good happen. We had our first algebra test and about 4 got 100’s and several more got A’s. Only one got a flat out F and even that dooesn’t really bug me knowing that the Abeka curriculum uses a higher scale for grades (ie 100-94=A). So that is good news to me. I am actually getting this stuff across to the kids. Another great thing is the way the 8th grade class and I have mended our past. I taught them in 5th grade and it was a very difficult year for all involved. We were all a bit nervous about being together again. But, I told them God is into redemption and I think he gave us this year for that. So there ya go…something good is happeneing at CHCS!

I think it’s true…

that kids have lost their imagination. I was teaching my drama class today and had them play a game calle “Story Orchestra”. 4 kids stand and I point to them one at at time and at their turn they begin to tell a story or add on to the previous information. As I switch people the story grows and is supposed to get more elaborate. Well, the first one went ok then the next group got up there…hoo boy. One or two sentences in…It was so sad. They couldn’t seem to get past a few lines and it always turned the same direction. “The hippo fell off the slide and went to the hospital…” I was quite amazed that the one kid who has been very difficult so far, was the best at it. I wonder if they have ever pretended they were someone else?

I’m thinking…

Keeping on…

Sunday, September 18th, 2005

We are home. Christian has two stents now. The hope is that they will keep things open enough to allow any other stones that were missed or may turn up to pass relatively pain free. I use that term loosely since I really have no idea what it is like to pass a kidney stone, especially through a male part. In 10 days we return for more x-rays and hopefully find out a course of action to combat kidney stones. My only response now is “drink more water”.

So…

Back to Cedars today. This time Jared went and it is killing me. I’ll try to state it simply:
1:30 am
Christian”Mom, I’m hurting on my right side.”
Me: “Ok, I’ll get the Tylenol.”
Him: “OK”

6:30 AM
Me: “Are you ok?” (He’s still asleep)
Him “No, I’m still hurting.”
Me: “How much.”
Him: “A 6-7.”
Me: “More Tylenol?”
Him: “Ok.”
Me: “Do you want me to call the doctor?”
Him: “Yes.”

8:30 am
Puking and in pain…on the way to the doctor.

10:00am
Ultrasound shows obstruction on right kidney. A Cat scan is scheduled but not until 1:30.

1:30
Cat scan

2:30
Cat Scat shows another kidney stone on the right. This time low, almost to the bladder.

3:30 Admitted to hospital. On IV fluids and Morphine…hoping for the stone to pass on it’s own.

And we wait…

Sorry that wasn’t so brief. Is anyone else sick of this yet? My poor baby.

Kidney Stones Part Deux

Monday, September 12th, 2005

After another long day of waiting, (thanks to the DWP worker who cut the power cable and then tried to jam it back together) we got in and Christian got those darn stones out. Yes, multiple stones and one imbedded in his kidney. I declare, it is never simple with the ‘kidney from hell’, as I have lovingly decided to call it. Another stupid stent and another trip down in a couple of weeks. But, I must say my worries are few compared to the family next to me whose daughter’s spine was severed by a hit and run drunk driver -and will never walk again. God always places someone like that next to me when I am at the hospital to remind me that there is so much more than me and my little world. Her name is Jade.

Kidney Stones

Sunday, September 11th, 2005

It appears that kidney stones are related to a) diet or b) kidney malfunction issues. I am guessing that Chrsitian would fit into the second category. We will find out for sure in the next day or so. I am hoping that the doctors will have mercy on him and just scoop the darn thing out rather than making him pass it. We’ll see.

You asked for it

Well, one thing is for sure, some kids take what you say and actually put it into practice. On Friday, one of my younger students came to me after receiving a low score on a homework assignment and said that he had not been able to finish his assignment due to stomach upset caused by going to Weinerschnitzel for dinner the night before. I secretly rolled my eyes, but graciously said that if we would spend his lunch playtime finishing it, I would adjust his grade. So he did go do most of it. When he brought it to me, I told him if such a thing were to happen again to be sure to bring a note from home stating that he had been sick and was unable to complete the work. Well, voila! Tuesday (we even had a long weekend) rolls around and here he is unfolding a note that says he was too sick to do his work. Wow, I really set myself up there. Duh! Be careful what you ask for!

Who Said…

kids have no creativity or ingenuity anymore? Yesterday at lunch some of the boys were not playing nice with the bouncy balls. So, the lunch assistant said no bouncy balls for the rest of the week. Today at lunch I was walking by and saw the kids were playing dodgeball…no, wait, they were playing dodge-lunchpail. They had taken a soft lunch box and were hurling it at each other as they would every other day, but usually with a bouncy ball. I thought it pretty inventive. Good job, kids!
