Resolutions

Resolutions

I think I’ve decided resolutions and the idea around January 1st bugs me. Not that you really care, but…why is it that all of a sudden this day, which in all truth is not much different than any other day, do people decide “I was doing this wrong or crappy or differently than I should have, so today I’m gonna change. I like the “conversatio morem” thing that Greg brought up on Sunday. A”continual conversion”. The idea, or hopefully the desire and movement to change daily to become more in the image of Jesus. So, I resolve to press toward change everyday, a daily resolution, if you will. Hopefully for the better, always stretching to become more like Him.

if so many people make a positive life decision and the societal pressures to adhere to a decision made on the day on which we celebrate newness as a whole, why is it so negative that they were not motivated towards change prior to now? some days really are more important than others, and that’s okay.

I am questioning the adhering part. I think is is crazy how people eat or smoke or whatever like crazy and say…”on the 1st, things are gonna change.” Why not start today…or December 27th, etc? And what is so sacred about that day that you’ll stick with it more than any other day. I guess it is one of those psychological things. Easier to keep track of how long or some such thing. I didn’t say it was wrong or bad anyway, I just said the idea kinda bugs me.

MaMaJ: you know what I meant.

i was kidding. and anyway, hardly anyone sticks with their new year’s resolutions. come on, we all know that. it’s like you say martha, make the decision any day, and every day. that’s the only way. rah!

this week has been really busy at the Y because so many people start their yearly health kick. I’ve been told it lasts about a month and then the numbers go back to the usual speed.

but why hate on the people that do? why not encourage them? like it or not, it’s an important day in our society for renewal. even if 90% or even 99% don’t stick with it, what about those 1-10%? they are to be praised.

  7. Martha Says:

Are you baiting me? I never “hated” on anyone. I just said it bugs me. Yay for those who stick with it, what ever IT is. I’m sure you will be in the 1-10% in whatever you have set as your resolution, and so good for you. I prefer to live for today.

A lot of people think of the new year as a beginning, obviously, so I don’t think that it’s too weird that that’s when people start their diets, smoking cessation programs, exercising regimens, etc… I am all for bettering oneself. There is a problem, however, when March comes and people have given up- they have turn their backs on promises/contracts they have made with themselves and have failed. Why? Because in striving for all the personal “upgrades”, they have lost or forgotten what matters the most: faith in Jesus that he will be able to give you strength to complete goals within his will. That kind of faith just doesn’t come around once a year- it is something you have to have to make it day to day and still be in God’s will.

Ok. I’m done with my sermon. Or comment. Or my two cents worth.

oops that comment was from me. :-)
