Valsalva maneuver
Valsalva maneuver
Did you know that there is a name for the thing you do when you plug your nose and blow with your mouth closed in an effort to pop your ears? This is it. I learned something. Probably not that useful, but interesting.

I had no idea there was a name (or maneuver) for that. Good to know.

i think it’s also called breaking your ear drums.

Yeah, don’t blow too hard.

that’s why i use a special pressure valve that fits on my mouth. it’s set to open when pressures reach those great enough to burst an ear drum. that way i can open my eustachian tubes with the exact force required and never have to worry about injuries. this is, of course, a silly lie, although i’m sure i could make a nice profit selling those valves.

Anytime you increase your internal thoracic pressure, that is call the valsalva maneuver. The Valsalva Manueuver is also very good for a person to do if he/she has a central IV line and it gets accidentally dislodged. When pregnant women “bear down”, or when you “bear down” to poop, that is the good ol’ Valsalva at work.

So, like when you (by “you” I mean “me”)take a big huge inhale, and hold it real hard to get rid of hick-ups (i know that’s not how to spell ‘em) is that valsalva?
