Valsalva maneuver

Valsalva maneuver

Did you know that there is a name for the thing you do when you plug your nose and blow with your mouth closed in an effort to pop your ears? This is it. I learned something. Probably not that useful, but interesting.

I had no idea there was a name (or maneuver) for that. Good to know.

i think it’s also called breaking your ear drums.

    Yeah, don’t blow too hard.

that’s why i use a special pressure valve that fits on my mouth. it’s set to open when pressures reach those great enough to burst an ear drum. that way i can open my eustachian tubes with the exact force required and never have to worry about injuries. this is, of course, a silly lie, although i’m sure i could make a nice profit selling those valves.

Anytime you increase your internal thoracic pressure, that is call the valsalva maneuver. The Valsalva Manueuver is also very good for a person to do if he/she has a central IV line and it gets accidentally dislodged. When pregnant women “bear down”, or when you “bear down” to poop, that is the good ol’ Valsalva at work. :-)

So, like when you (by “you” I mean “me”)take a big huge inhale, and hold it real hard to get rid of hick-ups (i know that’s not how to spell ‘em) is that valsalva?
